Today, there are many treatments people undergo so they can be cured of their sickness. From modern treatments like surgery and medicine to alternative treatments like acupuncture, herbal remedy, and cupping. All is done so they become healthy again.
In Islam, there is one treatment that is recommended by the Prophet: Hijama, or cupping, was practiced by the Prophet and He recommended His Ummah to do it also. - Hijama as One of the Best Medicines
Narrated by Ibn’ Abbas, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Healing is to be found in 3 things: drinking honey, the knife of the cupper, and cauterization of fire.” (Reported by al-Bukhaari, 10/136)
- Angels Recommended Hijama
Narrated by Anasibn Malik, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “I did not pass by any group on the night when I was taken on the Isra’ (Night Journey), but they said to me, ‘O Muhammad, tell your Ummah to do hijama.’” (Reported by IbnMaajah, 3477)
Best Time to Do Hijama
Although hijama can be done anytime, especially if it is due to necessity, there are ideal times when we should do hijama.
- 17th, 19th or 21st of Islamic Lunar Calendar
Narrated by Ibn’ Abbas, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The best times to be treated with cupping are the 17th, 19th or 21st (of the Islamic lunar month).” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, 2054)
- When One’s Stomach Is Empty
Narrated by Ibn’ Umar, the Prophet said: Hijama cupping on an empty stomach is best. It (hijama) increases the intellect as well as improves the memory. It (hijama) improves the memory of the one who is memorizing.” (Reported by SunanIbnMajah, 3488).
Benefits of Hijama According to Sunnah
The Prophet Muhammad told us there are many benefits of hijama sunnah. For instance,
- Sharpen the Eyesight
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The best treatment is hijama; it (hijama) removes blood, lightens the back and sharpens the eyesight.” (Reported by Sunan al-Tirmidhi, 3053)
- Improves Memory
Narrated by Ibn’ Umar, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Hijama on an empty stomach is best. It (hijama) increases the intellect as well as improves the memory. It (hijama) will improve the memory of the one who is memorizing.” (Reported by SunanIbnMajah, 3488).
- Curing Headache
Salma, the servant of the Prophet, said: “Whenever someone would complain of a headache to the Prophet (peace be upon him), He (peace be upon him) would advise them to perform hijama. (Reported by SunanabiDawud, 3858)
- Curing Magic
Ibn al-Qaiyum mentioned that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was cupped on his head at the time when he was afflicted with magic and that (hijama) is from the best of cures for this (magic) if done correctly. (Zaad al Ma’aad, 4/125-126)
